When speaking of ‘personal computers’, you need to understand that these are considered to be a computer that is mainly used by an individual for his/her personal use only. The use of computers in this manner began during the mid 1970′s and has traveled one heck of a long way since then.

Today, you can actually consider many of the cell phones on the market as ‘mini personal computers’ and they do an excellent job, especially considering how very small they are! Personal computers infiltrate the very fabric of our society today. Almost anywhere you can find electricity you will find personal computers. (In reality, you don’t even need the electricity, but you better have some serious batteries…)

We have gone from what today would be considered ‘calculators’ to personal computers that can take pictures, do live video feeds and do countless calculations per minute. Almost everyone has one and many couldn’t live without it.

Initially personal computers cost a lot of money, considering what they actually did. But today, they are relatively inexpensive keeping in mind what tasks they can perform. (And we haven’t even talked about email!) As of June of 2008 there were over one billion personal computers in use worldwide and that growth rate is around 12 per year.

Cell phones have long since departed from simply being a mobile way to make a phone call. Thanks to the advent of smartphones, cell phones can now access the internet, run a variety of useful and fun programs, and send e-mail and text messages quickly and easily.

There are several reasons for the rise in smartphone popularity:

1. The types of smartphones available has greatly increased due to the plethora of smartphone makers on the market and the variety of smartphone operating systems now available (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows, etc.)

2. People are more dependent on the internet now then ever before, and social media apps available on smartphones allow users to quickly connect with their friends. In addition, the robust internet browsers available on today’s smartphones make browsing the web almost as easy as on conventional computers; texting is made very easy due to physical or onscreen keyboards. The sheer amount of free and paid apps and programs available for smartphones give users a wide range of products, games, and services to choose from.

3. The price of smartphones has gone down considerably, given even those with modest incomes the ability to own what is basically a miniature computer.

Should you hear of upcoming technology conventions in your neck of the woods that sound interesting, then take pen to paper. Wait, isn’t that for dinosaurs? Well how about dictating the date into your handheld device. There it will then be transcribed by voice recognition into a text/email or voice message. The end destination and type of file conversion has been preplanned by the user.

It’s quite nifty when suddenly your calendar has the info, email reminder and text message reminders will be auto sent to yourself. Even email addresses of contacts that share common interests recognized by keyword optimization can be notified. This certainly sounds a much cooler way to organize a schedule than a post-it note.

One of the fantastic things about technology conventions is the energy and excitement that comes from a gathering of like-minded enthusiasts. This very excitement is something that when children sense and feel, quite often it provides the spark and kindles their interest. Exposure to new ideas and future thinking is a fantastic resource.

Quite often the larger technology conventions have something to offer just about everybody. You may see a mix of the latest computer technology and other software, games and peripherals. It’s easy to please the whole family as mixing fun with education truly equals quality time.

The Federal Trade Commission’s “Do Not Call Registry,” introduced in 2003, allows Americans to register their number to avoid unsolicited telemarketing. Telemarketers are fined for each instance of breaking this rule. In early December 2010, the FTC supported a “do not track” mechanism which would allow users, whether on wireless internet, wired internet, or a mobile device, to visit web sites without being monitored. Online advertisers say this could be difficult to implement and could also inhibit online commerce. Stuart Ingis, a counsel to the Digital Advertising Alliance (which includes Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo), stated that “if a broad percentage of people signed on to this, it would really undercut the Internet model.”That model may be changing faster than Ingis and others think, as DAA member Microsoft has included a new feature in its Internet Explorer 9 that will accomplish much the same thing as the FTC “do not track” option. This feature, called Tracking Protection, will allow users to block certain third-party companies from tracking their movements online. IE9 users would create a list of sites they do not want to share information.Jules Polonetsky, co-chairman and director of the Future of Privacy Forum, says that most people will likely not use the option, while others will rely on lists created by consumer advocacy groups. Online advertisers have said that such an option would be a severe blow to their industry, since such advertisers target their ads to users based on their browsing history. Users who choose to use the Tracking Protection of Internet Explorer 9 will still see ads, but they will not be targeted to the user’s interests. However, Microsoft says that online advertising will still be able to co-exist with the new feature.

The dangers of texting while driving are well-documented by nowthe DOT says handling a device in any way while driving increases the chances of a crash by four times. One solution to the ban on texting in many states is to simply wait until you’re out of the car. Massachusetts developer AdelaVoice is working on another option, thoughone which is actually very interesting for consumer technology. The company’s newest project is StartTalking, an app that transcribes your own texts and reads others back to you. The program reads your own messages back to you as well before sending, so don’t worry about any amusing (or disastrous) miscommunications coming out of this technology. Basically, it’s like having a tiny, less-attractive receptionist sitting in your passenger seat at all times. The phone screen doesn’t even have to turn on, which saves energy. CEO Christopher Hassett estimates that the program takes up 4 percent of the battery per hour. The app launched on Android first, but will come to iPhone and Blackberry soon. If you need to stay connected while in the car, use StartTalking and stay safe. Your fellow drivers will thank you.

Sometimes life fails to entertain us, what with its lack of clear goals, score keeping, and antagonists that you can easily avoid. Luckily, augmented reality (AR) games provide all that and more. Ignore the looks on the faces of those around you and get in on the fun with our list of five favorites.

5. ARSoccer Updating the classic game of “kick the can,” this game lets you knock around a soccer ball of your choice. We don’t recommend crossing the street while playing (since you have to stare down at your phone), but it’s good for a bit of mindless fun.

4. Parallel Kingdom This free game combines massively multiplayer role-playing games with location-based social networking. You control your character around an adventure-filled environment layered over the real world, fighting enemies, leveling up, and buying new items.

3. Dimension Invaders It’s a 50s horror movie come to life. Round, vaguely menacing balls of energy advance on you from all directions, and it’s your job to blast them out of the air. The game costs a well-deserved 0.99, which gets you twelve lengthy levels.

2. Augmented Car Finder AR Car Finder isn’t really a game, but you’ll feel like a winner each time you use it. The game uses location-based technology to remember where you parked your car, and then guides you back to it with a steady hand. While it’s subject to hiccups, being able to avoid parking lot frustration even half of the time is a step forward.

1. SpecTrek Our favorite game is also the one that gives us nightmares. Shows like Ghost Hunters capitalize on the thrill of hunting down the unexplained. In SpecTrek, the unexplained hunts you. Ghosts pop up all over the world, and you use the iPhone’s camera to scoop them up and save the day. The people around you will thank you.

A123 is a lithium-ion battery manufacturer, and one of the Guardian’s 2009 “Global Cleantech 100.” The company could be cementing that reputation in the near future with the announcement of a new spinoff company, 24M, working on some mysterious new energy storage technology.Nothing firm has been announced, but spokespeople have mentioned flow batteries in conjunction with the project. In a standard flow battery, electrolyte travels or “flows” through a cell, which converts the inherent chemical energy into clean, usable electricity. They can be recharged more easily (and more quickly) than regular batteries by switching out the electrolyte solution. This means that powerful batteries can take small shapes, as long as there’s a good supply of electrolyte nearby. While people have already suggested this technology for powering cars, it would also offer wind and solar power plants a new way to store the energy they produce. The Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and DARPA are all standing behind this new technology, which a spokeswoman said “will be available within five years.”

Even though comic book characters are rising in public attention with big-name films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man 2, that interest has not always translated into bigger sales for comic shops. One reason may be the price point of a standard comic–2.99-3.99 for one 32-page issue (featuring 22 pages of story and 10 pages of ads). Big-name comics publishers DC and Marvel are betting that some of those holdouts will be brought in by digital comics, which sacrifices hard copies for a lower price and ease of use. Both companies are offering free apps for the iPad which allows users to download individual issues of current series. For the most part, these comics are available after the print versions, although some smaller comics companies like Image have announced plans for same-day print-and-digital publishing. Still, for those interested only in reading and not in collecting, the digital option makes a lot of sense. 1.99 gets you a full issue, and you can sign up to keep downloading the newest issues.Reading on the iPad is easier than you might think. The iPad’s size works well for viewing pages, and you can also enlarge individual panels to admire an artist’s handiworkor if your eyes are going and you just don’t want to admit it.Apps aren’t the only option for downloading books. You can go to comiXology.com and start your own profile where you can download books from a variety of publishers. A special feature for users of DC’s digital reader is that all books downloaded can be accessed at this site. If you plan on going back and rereading stories, this is a great benefit. If not, it’s still a good way of protecting your investment, even if chances are that you’re not concerned about your comics in the future anyway. After all, there’s not exactly a market for digital back issues. Hopefully, digital comics will see an increase in comics fans and increase support for some classic characters.

Sirius XM Adapter: The new XM Snap! device, launching in October, will give Sirius subscribers the ability to turn any car radio into a satellite radio receiver. The price? 59.99 for a gadget that plugs into your cigarette adapter. It’ll even display the artist and song, just like a real satellite radio.

Space Hotel: Energia, the lead contractor on the International Space Station, wants to make a private space station that will house up to seven billionaires I mean, people. The hotel isn’t expected before 2016, but the company has already released some ideas. Think: four rooms. Celebrity chefs. Most importantly, actual showers, as opposed to the tourists who’ve already gone up and used no-rinse soap at the ISS.

Las Vegas hotel “death ray”: It’s something straight out of James Bond: a mirrored hotel which roasts its guests. The Vdara Hotel is constructed in such a way that sunlight on the south side is reflected off into an area directly below right where the pool is. Guests have already complained of being cooked (well, more-so than in normal tanning) and the hotel is working to remedy the problem.

Blackberry tablet: RIM will be releasing its first Blackberry tablet, the PlayBook, in early 2011. It features a new operating system (appropriately titled the Blackberry Tablet OS) and will have Flash compatibility. With a 7-inch LCD screen, 1 GB RAM, and HDMI video, the tablet has the makings of an iPad competitor, but we’ll reserve judgment for now.
